Where the rule came from
It started with the Hardcore Championship. The title already had no disqualifications and no count-outs, but what turned it into an institution was the decision to defend it around the clock. Crash Holly is the name most associated with that era — he treated the belt as something to be defended everywhere he went, and the chases that followed became a staple of late-1990s and early-2000s programming.
The comedy worked because the stakes were real. A title that can change hands at any moment turns every backstage segment into a potential match.
The 24/7 Championship
WWE brought the idea back with the 24/7 Championship, a green-and-white belt defended under exactly the same rule. It produced the same thing the Hardcore title did: long reigns of two seconds, title changes in the middle of other people's storylines, and a running gag that anyone on the roster might be champion by the end of the night.
Purists argue it devalues a championship. The counter-argument is that it was never trying to be a serious title — it was trying to be fun, and it was.
What the rule actually requires
- A referee present. No official, no title change. This is the whole reason champions run.
- Anywhere counts. Arena, hotel, airport, someone's house — location has never been a limit.
- Any time. Including while the champion is unconscious, which has happened more than once.
